This paper hopes to demonstrate how small details brilliantly carved in the eleventh-century ivories in the Museo Diocesano in Salerno differentiate events from Christ’s life from those based on Hebrew Scripture. Reifying St. Jerome’s assertion that “the types of the Old Testament establish the truth of the Gospels”, the ivories thus use realia to distinguish episodes meant to be read as prophecy from those designed to engage viewers in a “true” vision of God incarnate.
